Current Trends
Microlearning
Microlearning is still one of the most popular trends in 2024 for e-learning in corporation spaces. It is personally one of my favorite trends because it keeps the learner in mind with designing and also because it promotes lifelong learning.
What is microlearning?
Microlearning is an educational strategy that breaks down complex topics into small, manageable units or short-term learning activities. It's designed to provide learners with bite-sized, focused content that can be quickly consumed and easily retained. The key characteristics of microlearning are brevity, focus, and variability, making it ideal for today's fast-paced and distraction-filled environments.
Microlearning is effective because it aligns with the modern learner's lifestyle, allowing them to learn at their own pace, in their own time, and often on their own devices. It's a versatile approach that can be applied across various industries and learning contexts.
Examples of Microlearning:
- Short Videos: A common example is brief instructional videos that cover a single topic or concept within a few minutes. These videos are focused and concise, allowing learners to grasp the information quickly.
- Infographics: Infographics are visually engaging tools that summarize information or data. They are particularly effective for visual learners and can convey complex ideas in a simplified and easy-to-digest format.
- Interactive Quizzes: Short quizzes that reinforce learning or test knowledge on a specific topic. These can provide immediate feedback, helping learners assess their understanding and retention of the content.
- Flashcards: Digital flashcards can be used to memorize terms, definitions, or concepts. They're a simple yet effective tool for reinforcement and review.
- Podcasts: Brief audio sessions focusing on specific topics can be an effective form of microlearning, especially for auditory learners or for people on the go.
How can microlearning be used in the training room?
Learning is not just limited to a classroom or training room. Learning can be done anywhere. If you have a mobile phone you automatically have access to different ways to learn from short videos like TikRok, social media posts, or new articles. Businesses can also take this approach by having access to microlearning material while on the go.
Microlearning is also personalizable. The learner decides what they want to focus on and they don't have to focus on learning information that they already know or isn't useful for them. This speed of time allows the learner to be ready for work sooner.
I love microlearning because it is fun and everyone can benefit from it. Microlearning isn't just a trend either; I think it's the future of learning! It's flexible, personalized, and it respects the fact that our attention spans aren't what they used to be.
So, here's to microlearning – making lifelong learning something we have time for!
